WELCOME TO MY LAB MUSIC VIDEO!
Thank you parents for your generosity that helped make the escape room a HUGE success! The students were able to use everything they learned this year to find the cure and save the world from a zombie apocalypse!
Solar smores were a success! Thank you all for contributing the materials. The kids had a blast!

Hey class! I used a cool free app called Skyview to locate Mars and Saturn tonight. They look like stars, but they don't twinkle. Mars will have a slightly red tint and Saturn will be diagonally above it. Saturn is a lot further than Mars, but because Mars is so small compared to Saturn they appear the same size in tonight's sky. Pretty cool, huh?!
Classroom Expectations:
Hello Students and Parents!
My name is Katlin Burley and I am the 6th grade science teacher at DCSM. I am absolutely ecstatic to be working at Duval Charter School at Mandarin and very passionate about the students and the subject matter. Before the school year begins, I would like to explain my expectations and procedures, as well as give an overview of some of my class and school-wide policies.
My classroom expectations are as follows:
1. BE RESPECTFUL
I expect that all students treat teachers, other students, and themselves with the utmost respect. A positive environment will produce the most effective learning and help to create a positive classroom community. It is my hope that with showing and being shown respect that students will take pride in themselves and their peers, and work together to learn together.
2. BE ENGAGED AND ATTENTIVEI expect that all students be engaged and attentive in class; this means that participation is not only encouraged, but required. One of my teaching philosophies is that students learn best through interaction with one another. It is my hope that students are active participants in their learning.
3. BE RESPONSIBLEI expect that all students act responsibly both inside and outside of the classroom; this means that students are to take responsibility for their actions, whether it be homework or their behaviors. It is my hope that your middle schoolers will begin their growth into responsible young adults both academically and socially.
4. BE SAFEI expect that all students act safely with their bodies. Science includes many activities that will involve different materials that could be used unsafely. It is my hope that as students treat them with respect, they also act safely with these materials so that we can all have the best learning experience possible.
5. BE CURIOUSI expect all students to enter my classroom with a sense of curiosity. Science is driven by inquiry, and in order for scientific learning to occur, students must be curious. It is my hope that student questions will drive the learning in the classroom and create a very engaging and personal learning experience.
CLASSROOM POLICIES
Grades are given two forms: Practice and Mastery.
Practice grades do not count towards your child’s final grade, but are very important towards obtaining mastery of content. Practice grades include (but are not limited to) homework, exit tickets, and classwork. Practice grades reflect your child’s work towards understanding of a concept, but do not reflect their mastery of that concept.
Mastery grades are the only grades calculated in your child’s final grade. Mastery grades represent your child’s understanding and mastery of a concept, and include (but are not limited to) in school assessments and individual classwork. I will be giving multiple types of assessments including more formal assessments such as quizzes and tests, but also informal assessments such as projects.
Test retakes:
Your child has the ability to retake any assessment that was not completed at mastery level (80% or above); that being said, it is up to your child to meet the requirements to earn the privilege of retaking an assessment. The requirements for retakes are as follows: after-school tutoring, 100% completion of in-class and at-home learning assignments, and good behavior/attitude. If your child does not meet these requirements, I will work with them to meet them in order to retake a mastery grade. When your child retakes a mastery assessment, their original grade will be replaced with the retake; this is a very helpful policy, so it is in your child’s best interest to meet the requirements and take advantage of the privilege when needed.
Homework and Late work:
Homework will be given for practice grades, and will at times be student specific. If your child is struggling with a concept, I will prepare extra assignments for them to do at home to ensure they master the content; I am also willing to meet for after-school tutoring to meet this goal. Late work will be accepted, but will have consequences such as lost privileges. I will not take points off for late work, but do understand that if assignments are consistently turned in late, it will hinder your child’s ability to retake mastery assignments (remember, it is a privilege), which could hurt their final grade.
Please have your child bring a marble composition notebook to class; we will be using these daily and they will be a big part of this class. I would also appreciate any donations of colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, and index cards. These items will also be put to good use daily, and I appreciate anything you can help provide. Thank you!
If you have any questions or concerns at any point this year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child!
